Justin “Chip” Taylor Smith is an American filmmaker who's career has been rooted in outdoor adventure sports filmmaking and advertising since 2007. Growing up in San Diego, he documented his friend’s skateboarding and surfing with a MiniDV camera, editing the footage into short movies, selling DVD’s at his high school when he was a teen. The obsession with movie making would lead to his entrance into the industry in 2007 at DC Shoe Co. in San Diego. Here Smith became an integral part of the production team behind viral Youtube sensations such as “Ken Block’s GYMKHANA” series (Over 550 million views) and “Robbie Maddison’s AIR.CRAFT.”
Smith left southern California for Wyoming in 2013 to work for Brain Farm Digital Cinema where he would hone his skills as a cinematographer and editor working on feature film projects such as Travis Rice’s “The Fourth Phase” and Ty Evan’s “We Are Blood.”
In 2017 Smith partnered with Travis Rice and wrote, directed and produced award winning snowboard film “Depth Perception.” This film would pave the way for his new found passion as a Director. Since then Smith has co-directed Robin Van Gyn’s acclaimed docu-series “FABRIC”, edited and post-produced Burton Snowboard’s “One World” and directed aerial sequences over Yellowstone for National Geographic’s “America the Beautiful.”
In 2022, his film “Omoiyari - A Song Film by Kishi Bashi” premiered in Austin, TX at the SXSW Film Festival, his directorial debut as a documentary filmmaker. The 5 year film follows acclaimed artist Kishi Bashi as he sets out to reimagine the Japanese American Incarceration during WWII through art and song. The film was picked up by MTV Documentary Films and is slated for release in theatre’s and streaming on Paramount+ in 2023.
No stranger to some of the most remote film locations on the planet or months in the edit bay Smith has directed, produced, lensed and edited branded content and films for clients such as MTV Documentary Films, National Geographic, Red Bull, Arc’teryx, W.L. Gore, SITKA, Burton Snowboards, The Oregon Symphony, XDubai, Chevrolet, Quiksilver, DC Shoes, Skullcandy, Mountain Dew, CMH Heli and The Nitro Circus.
